So, tapos na nga yung UAAP Season 71…
Pero hindi pa rin tapos ang Archer-Eagle rivalry…
Alam niyo ba kung saan nagsimula yung rivalry nila?
Medyo na curios din ako, so share ko sa inyo what ive found..
Grabe sana pwede research paper ito sa ENGLRES, I’ve spent my whole free day, Ramadan Day, researching for this.. ahahaha. Wala lang.. trip lang..
The NCAA Days
According to many researchers, the DLSU-ADMU rivalry can be traced back in the NCAA days. (Actually, DLSU is still a college by then, De La Salle College.) In the years 1930-1933, Ateneo won its three-straight championships wherein they got their first grand slam in the NCAA.
Based on some researchers and commentators, the rivalry started when Ateneo and Lasalle met in the championship in 1939. Lasalle got their first trophy in the NCAA where they won with a 27-23 score over Ateneo. The game was also said to be the lowest scoring game in the NCAA history.
During their(Lasalle’s) victory parade, Lasallians(or Lasallites, which they are called back then) threw FRIED CHICKENS into the Ateneo’s Padre Faura Campus. [Ateneo was originally located in Intramurost (in Jose Rizal’s time) then they transferred in Padre Faura(the present-day Robinson’s place). In 1954, the Ateneo campus was burned, so they transferred in their current location now which is on Loyola Heights, Quezon City.]
In 1958, Lasalle and Ateneo met up again for the second time in the finals where the Eagles won with a 105-103 victory.
The UAAP Days
During the 1970’s, due to the violent NCAA games(which left players limping after the game because of the physical play that characterized it, according to Benojar and Peralta1), Ateneo withdrew from the NCAA and joined the UAAP in 1978. Lasalle also withdrew in the NCAA in 1981, but because a unanimous vote was needed to be a member of the UAAP, Lasalle was not accepted right away. Dr. Nicanor Reyes, Jr. proposed a 2/3 majority vote to become a member school of the UAAP, so then Lasalle was accepted in 1986, whose membership was denied 3 times by ADMU and UST.
After Lasalle transferred in the UAAP, Lasalle and Ateneo revived their rivalry. In 1988, Lasalle and Ateneo met again for the UAAP finals, where the Eagles won 75-66. The following year, 1989, Lasalle got its first Championship victory in the UAAP and in the following year, 1990, DLSU also got its second Championship victory in the UAAP.
In the years 1998-2001, DLSU won its 4 consecutive titles. After 13 years(from1988-2001), Lasalle and Ateneo met again in the UAAP Finals in 2001 where Lasalle won. In the following year, 2002, Ateneo break Lasalle’s consecutive title thus also ending their 14-year Title drought.
And recently, 2008, ADMU won all its games against DLSU up to the finals, which gave ADMU their 4th Title for the UAAP Basketbal.
The Statistics
Based on my research, DLSU won 7 times in the UAAP, while ADMU only won 4 times.
Year | Champion Team |
1987 | Ateneo De Manila University |
1988 | Ateneo De Manila University |
1989 | De La Salle University |
1990 | De La Salle University |
1998 | De La Salle University |
1999 | De La Salle University |
2000 | De La Salle University |
2001 | De La Salle University |
2002 | Ateneo De Manila University |
2007 | De La Salle University |
2008 | Ateneo De Manila University |
Technically, DLSU should have won 8 titles in the UAAP, but as everyone know DLSU was suspended because it fielded two ineligible players, so the 2004 Championship Title was given to FEU instead.
If I’m not mistaken, DLSU and ADMU met only 6 times in the Finals. 2 times during the NCAA days and 4 times during the UAAP finals. Out of the 6 Final games of both teams, ADMU won 4 times over DLSU, while Lasalle only won 2 times over Ateneo, 1 in the NCAA and 1 in the UAAP.
Year | Winning Team |
1939 | De La Salle University |
1958 | Ateneo De Manila University |
1988 | Ateneo De Manila University |
2001 | De La Salle University |
2002 | Ateneo De Manila University |
2008 | Ateneo De Manila University |
As you can see, Lasalle can be boastful of because they’ve won 7 championships(technically 8) in the UAAP, while Ateneo can also be pround because they’ve won 4 out of 6 Final Games against Lasalle.
/*So wala pa yan sa research ko, introduction pa lang yun.. ito talaga main point ko..
Kahit wag niyo na basahin yun sa taas basta BASAHIN NIYO ITO…*/
THE TRUE HISTORY
As everyone know, the DLSU-ADMU rivalry was “assumingly” traced back in the NCAA days, but actually it’s NOT! Hahahahaha!
Based on my “nosebleeding” research, the rivalry can be traced back even in the time WHEN ST. JOHN BAPTIST DE LA SALLE IS STILL LIVING!!!! Whoooooahhhh…
As some of you know, I’m now a Student facilitator(Faci) in FORMDEV, one of the courses offered in CCS, in which we study the life of St. John Baptist De La Salle. In FORMDEV, we used a book entitled, The Work is Yours, written by Brother Luke Salm, in which it tells about the life of De La Salle from his birth until his death.
In the first chapter, Bro. Salm describes the family background of De La Salle as well as his education.
Here is also one of the excerpts in Chapter 1 where the DLSU-ADMU rivalry can be “traced” of…
(if some of you have the book its page 12 of The Work is Yours, 4th paragraph)
“Among his contemporaries enrolled in the College des Bons-Enfants, John Baptist would have found many of his young relatives. There were others related to the De La Salle family whose parents preferred the rival college of the Jesuits, which had been opened in Reims(France) some 50 years earlier. The Jesuit college had a reputation for being rather more innovative in its educational methods and a challenge to the staid and traditional Bons-Enfants. All through the seventeenth century, the precise relationship of the Jesuit college to the University of Reims and its privileges was the subject of a bitter dispute. It is tempting, nonetheless, to speculate on what influence a Jesuit undergraduate education might have had on John Baptist De La Salle.”
See,see?!
The parents of De La Salle choose the College des Bons-Enfants rather than the RIVAL Jesuit college!!! So ”magkaaway” na sina Lasalle at yung mga Jesuits nuon pa! bwahahahaha..
Nakakaloko yung last statement dun sa excerpt, what if pumasok nga si Lasalle dun sa Jesuit college, eh di:
1. so hindi magkakaroon ng Lasalle brothers
2.so pagwalang brothers, walang Lasalle schools
3.so pagwalang Lasalle schools, walang De La Salle University.
4.so pagwalang De La Salle University, walang Green Archers.
5.so pagwalang Green Archers, walang DLSU-ADMU rivalry
6.so pagwalang DLSU-ADMU rivalry, malungkot yung UAAP
7.so pagmalungkot yung UAAP, wala manood ng game
8.so pagwalang manonood ng game, walang bibili ng ticket
9.so pagwalang bibili ng ticket edi hindi kikita yung scalper
10. so paghindi kumita ang scalper, wala siya kakainin
11. so pagwala kakainin ang scalper, magugutom din pamilya niya
12.so pagnagutom pamilya niya, mamatay anak niya..
13.so pagnamatay anak niya.. and so on and so forth
Wahahahahaha wala na ako maisip.. bahala na kayu magdagdag..
Ito pa isa nakakaloko about dun sa excerpt…
Di ba ADMU will be celebrating its 150 years next year, tapos DLSU naman 100 years sa 2011? Eh di ba sabi dun sa excerpt na “the Jesuit college was opened 50 years earlier.” Grabe freaky..
Isa pang fact based dun sa excerpt.. “mas mayaman talaga ADMU kaysa DLSU”
Di ba sabi mas innovative sila, so dati pa lang mayaman na talaga ang ADMU. Kasi sinasabi ng mga tao, DLSU is a “school for the rich”, eh mas mayaman nga yung mga Ateneans kaysa sa amin. One of my proofs din kasi is binili kasi ng isang Atenean Alumni yung Gen Ad tix ng kaibigan ko worth 4000 pesos, isang pirasong GenAd lang yun, ah… actually manood dapat friend ko kaso binili nila kasi ganun sila ka desperate, ganun sila kayaman…
Anyway, so ngayun alam niyo na kung saan nanggaling ang DLSU-ADMU rivalry, hindi siya galling sa NCAA, galing siya on the time De La Salle is still living. Wahahahaha!
