What is FTK?

    For the Kids(FTK) is an annual mini-Olympics for special children organized by the Volunteer Formation Program of the Center for Social Concern and Action(COSCA) of DLSU through its Lasallian Outreach and Volunteer Effort(LOVE)

 

    Games such as softball throw, tennis ball throw, standing long jump, 25-50-75 meter run/walk, parlor games, and basketball shooting are played by more than 500 special children from different schools in Metro Manila.

 

    Every year, more or less 800 volunteers work together to make FTK possible. Volunteers vary from students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other students of the LaSalle system schools.

 

What are the different disabilities?

• Visually impaired/ Blind- These are children with problems with sight. There are three types of visually impaired/blind: (1)totally sightless (2) able to see light (3) blurred vision of the world.

• Mentally retarded- Children primarily with a slower learning process than the average child. Some have social and emotional "complications" as well, but most are educable for and trainable up to a certain extent.

• Physically disabled-Children possessing lame, lacking or disfunctioning limbs. Others suffer from multiple physical impairments.

• Cerebral Palsy- A non-progressive disorder of movement and posture caused by damage to motor areas of the brain, Identified to type of movement disorder, which is characterized by shaking limbs, uncoordinated movements, and lack of balance. Often they lack the facility of speech.

• Autism- a developmental disability which affects communication, social interaction, and exhibiting sensory impairment shown by usual reaction to physical sensation.

• Down Syndrome- often referred to wrongly as mongolism, this is caused by a defective gene. Most of who have some form of mental retardation.

• Hearing impaired/ Deaf- some are totally unable to hear or have difficulty in hearing.

• Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD)- characterized by developmentally inappropriate level of attention, concentration, activity, and impulsitivity.
