Students’ Sentiments that were gathered regarding the proposal to move the free day from Friday to Monday due to holidays that fall on Mondays
Reasons why some students are for the proposal: |
· Make the most out of the tuition fee students pay. · No need for make-up classes. · Professors will not be on the rush to keep up with the schedule. · To avoid the heavy traffic on Monday mornings, especially for those who will be coming from provinces. · Sunday is a family day so there is a break on Monday. · Sunday is a family day; students can't do school work during Sundays. Instead, they'll do it on Mondays. Students will have an extra day to study at home and accomplish their requirements. · For some freshmen who live far from the campus, it would be better to have it on Monday so that they do not need to go back and forth to Taft for CWTS. · For those who really have classes on Saturday, it is better so that their classes and breaks will be continuous. · Some faculty currently set deadline of requirements on a Friday, so this is better since students will hit two birds in one stone: paper submission and class. |
Reasons why most students are against the proposal: | ||
Academic Related Reasons | Holistic Development Reasons | Other Reasons |
· For freshmen who take ROTC/CWTS will have classes for 5 straight days, but there are a lot of preparations required for CWTS/ROTC that are usually done a day before the CWTS/ROTC. It will be difficult to do the preparations in the evening only because most students are already dismissed late and have to wake up early the next day for CWTS or ROTC. · Friday was made for a day of activities and as students, studies should go first. It is only right to start the week with Academic days and not special activities. If Monday was the free day, special activities will go first and then back to academics on Tuesday. · For engineering students, most of their exams are scheduled on a Friday or a Saturday and that is the best time to have those exams (last day of the week), so that students will not be hassled and pressured on weekends because of the exams. Besides, it would be easier to take the test at the end of the week while the memory is still fresh in minds. · Currently, COE conducts quizzes on Friday and weekends will be for laboratory reports. If quizzes will now be move to Monday, they have to cram laboratory reports and study at the same time. · Laboratories are also better conducted on Fridays, after all the lectures. · For engineering, students have a lot of plant visits and companies are not usually open on weekends. If the no class day will be moved to a Monday and that’s a holiday, the companies will also be closed then. Students will be forced to cut classes to visit plants for term project. · CCS is prone to company interviews. Friday is the only day that the company can accommodate students and not Mondays because Mondays are usually busy days for them. · It would be hard to invite employees of companies to be resource speakers for activities on Monday since it is their busiest day. · Overnight projects concern. It is not practical to overnight Friday to Saturday, and then Monday again since Sunday is family day. · Friday is dedicated for student activities as well as project making or other additional school related works. If it will be moved to Monday, it might seem useless since we still don’t know yet the task for the week. | · It is better to start the week with studies first than activities. It is not good to start the week with concerts, pep rallies etc. · SC and CSO activities will be greatly compromised. Organizations will suffer for the sake of accommodating only a few holidays that will be transferred to a Monday. · Having UBREAKS during Fridays already promotes laziness for the students to attend meetings and practices, what more if it’s on a Monday? · It is already hard to ask students to come in for activities with the current schedule. It would be harder to get students to attend activities on a Monday. Coming from a weekend, people will have less motivation to go to school unless required.
· It is hard to have activities on Monday and there would be classes the following day.
· Athletes will no longer have the zest of training for the reason that there will be classes on the following day. | Mondays as mood starters · Monday is the mood starter for the week. Monday is perceived as the start of the week and Friday is technically part of a weekend. · Mondays should be the most productive day. · Students are all used to going to school on Mondays since pre-school and Monday is the day where students got excited to go to school. You are motivated because everyone else is going to their classes or work. · Students are more motivated to come to school on Mondays than on Fridays. If there will be no classes on Monday, it would be difficult to set your mind to go to school on Tuesday considering it as your first day of the week. The feeling is weird. · In a professional setting, Monday is a working day. If students graduate, they will not get used to Monday as their working day. · Friday will translate to WORK-REST-REST while Monday will translate to REST-REST-CRAM. They should not expect us to do our school obligations on a Saturday. It is called weekend and we grew up having weekends as out rest/leisure days. Will make students cram and will affect their studies. · Students will feel lazy to go to school on Tuesdays. · Prefer to work on Mondays and rest on weekends · More convenient and relaxing to have a free day at the end of the week. · More time on Sunday for family day since students will study on Friday and Saturday. · Spending last day of weekend with family or at home. · Activities before classes is not the norm ever since we were children and this would give us a hard time to adjust considering we have just adjusted to the Fridays-as-free-day schedule. Lifestyle Changes · Students have already adjusted to standardization of classes. · Students have already accustomed themselves to the current schedule. · Students and professors have adjusted to the current system. · DLSU changed the system just recently and changing it again will reflect indecisiveness upon the Admin. It will be very hard to adjust. · The proposal will not affect the schedule but will affect lifestyles. · Students will cram their studies on Monday. · Monday gives leeway to cramming .Unlike fridays, mentality is everything should be done so that the weekend is spent with non-academic reasons. · I can do my homework ahead of time and have a 'real' weekend giving me more time to spend with family and friends without having to worry about time for school work. If the free day would be moved on a Monday, it would take a toll on my weekend as I would have to worry about schoolwork that I am about to do on a Monday. · Better to have make-up or extra classes on a Friday than Monday. · Better to end the week with a day with no classes than to start one without classes. Work first, rest later. · Better to look forward to a Friday being the reward after four days of school. Better if students would look forward to good gimmicks on weekends especially Friday night than Sunday/Monday night. · Better if Sunday is the last day of weekend. · Friday, Saturday and Sunday have always been the accepted days for relaxation and family time. Families will not adjust to La Salle’s decisions. Students will be placed in a worse position. · For student who lives in province, Monday afternoon, after exams and laboratory in the morning, will not be utilized. Traffic · Traffic is heavy on Friday afternoon onwards. Friday’s rush hour going home is much worse than Monday’s. · Students who go home to provinces will have a hard time going home on Fridays because they will have to compete with workers/employees going home to their respective provinces as well. · It is easier to travel on a Monday morning than Friday evening. Traffic on Mondays can be avoided by going to school earlier. · For those who are going home on weekends only, no one will bring them to school on Tuesday and they have no one to ride with. · For those who lives in province and goes home every weekend, it is more convenient to research on a Friday than on a Monday when you are coming from province. Sustainability · What if the government decides to change its mind after Gloria’s regime? · Monday holidays are still under debate. · We arguing for the sake of few days of holidays that we can even count in our fingers. |
Appendix A:
Students’ Sentiments that were gathered on University of the Philippines Diliman’s (UPD) case: UPD transferred their free day from Wednesday to Monday due to holidays that fall on Mondays
For | Against |
· Since there are no classes on Saturday and Sunday, they prefer the Monday free day so that their break will be continuous. · They now have time to attend to gatherings on weekends since they have longer breaks. · Longer time for them to review and do assignments. · Traffic is terrible on Mondays (especially on my regular route to school). It takes me 2 hours or more to go to school compared to the usual 1. 5 hours travel time in the morning. | · Students tend to be lazier and relaxed since almost half of the week does not have classes. · Weekends are not productive for students since they have the mentality that “anyway, there is still a Monday”. · Students feel that time flies so fast, they just got into school and its weekend again after few days. · Prefer to have the break on Wednesday to have a break in the middle of school days to recharge and study. · Aside from it being already the traditional no class day of UP, it also serves as a form of rest for students. The date is strategically situated at the middle of the week to either be a form of rest or laundry day for those who stay in dorms. It also serves as a day for scheduling exams that might otherwise be scheduled on a weekend which could pose a problem for some people who go home to province. · If there are deadlines for Thursday and Friday, students still have Wednesday to do it, but since it is transferred to Monday, they oftentimes have a hard time to squeeze in their schedules. · Academic load seemed to be much heavier since the middle of the week break was removed. Monday became a free day but professors usually give lots of work in the middle (i.e. Tuesday or Wednesday) of the week so Monday as a free day seems useless for that. · The change was very sudden and also having experienced the Wednesday break for two years, it forced me to make a lot of adjustments in study and organization work habits. · Everyone should be entitled to enjoy holidays. |

// got this from kuya tori.
As a point of clarification, the University committees concerned with the issue have yet to have a final decision on the matter. Discussions are still on-going.

Re: Monday being the official University Break
Recently, the plan of moving the University Break of DLSU to a Monday was released in the campus newspaper: Ang Pahayagang Plaridel. We, the De La Salle University-Student Council Legislative Assembly, are standing against this plan of the administration for the following reasons:
Every student has the right to be properly informed of the programs, rules and regulations, and policies of the academic community (Article IV, Section 1 of the Student Council Constitution).
This plan of the administration is not well-publicized to the student body. The DLSU-SC admits that the publicity of such is a joint responsibility of administration and the student sector. Provided with this loophole in the deliberation of such policy, the DLSU Administration must not push for it because it violates the rights of the students as stated in the DLSU-Student Council Constitution and the Student Charter.
In the exercise of rights and freedoms, everyone shall be subject only to such limitations as are determined by law solely for the purpose of securing due recognition and respect for the rights and freedoms of others and of meeting the just requirements of morality, public order and the general welfare in a democratic society (Universal Declaration of Human Rights).
This plan of the administration was not well discussed with all the student sectors. We demand the administration to send a detailed proposal containing the reasons, rationale, advantages and disadvantages of this policy. Since this proposal was not delivered, providing such policy will violate the basic human right of the students not to be limited by policies that does not meet the just requirements as presented above. Hence, we believe that we must postpone the decision on this policy.
Student organizations shall not be subject to rules and regulations that unduly hamper their activities and are prejudicial to their objectives and interests, provided that such objectives are aligned with the university's mission (Student Charter, De La Salle University Student Handbook).
This plan of the administration hampers the activities and is prejudicial to the objectives and interests of the student organization because it entirely affects the schedule of the organizations’ activities. Thus, this kind of plan should undergo further research particularly on its impact to the student organizations.
Every student has the constitutional right to information (The Constitution of the Philippines 1987).
Every student has the constitutional right to information. The plan of the administration violates this right of the students because the administration should show first the result of the evaluation about the 1.5 class hour scheme before implementing a new system. We, as students, must be informed of such evaluation before we pilot test another entirely new system. Thus, implementing such plan violates our constitutional right to information. Hence, we are asking to postpone decision on this policy.
Lasallian achievers for God and Country.
It is the vision of DLSU-Manila to hone Lasallian Achievers for God and country. It is part of DLSU-Manila’s vision to have holistic development among Lasallian students. By implementing this kind of plan, DLSU will be inconsistent with its vision because it degrades student empowerment and involvement that is a major aspect of holistic development. Thus, we are asking the administration to postpone such decision.
With our reasons to oppose the implementation, we are recognizing our vital responsibility to help the administration in researching not only on the feasibility but also on the advantages and disadvantages of such proposal. We are more than willing to cooperate with the administration on deliberating on the policy. Thus, we are clearly asking the administration to postpone its decision.

Yesterday, im talking to some SC people regarding this.. sabi ng isang CAP that i have met, it will be surely be passed unless merong matinding ACADEMIC reasons ang pwede nila makontra to the admin..
actually, marami naman talaga ayaw nun, especially people from the CSO. wala na nga pumupunta every fri sa mga actvities, mas lalo pa kaya sa Mon na Ubreak..
pero yun nga its not ACADEMICALLY related, kaya i think the admin will not be bother to think about it, lalo na kung activties LANG naman yung paguusapan...
basically ang reason lang naman talaga kaya ililipat sa Monday, kasi di ba merong pinass si Pres. Gloria na law na imove lahat sa Mon yung holidays...
pero kaya nga merong HOLIDAYS,eh.. so people can enjoy it naman.. pambihira..
ACADEMIC reason.. :|
thank you for giving your opinion and using your account to spread information.
ReplyDeleteyung file mo na nakatable... kanino mo nakuha? yan ang binibigay namin sa admin.
"alita ko from SC people, this week daw malalaman kung matutuloy ba or hindi..
"This plan of the administration is not well-publicized to the student body. " actually >>publicized cya saming sc officers. hindi narelay sa students.
